Novel analysis: the pretenders

Honestly I did not finished reading the novel not because I am bored of this book but i started reading it late. Even if I did not finished the novel I listen to the reports of other.
Base in what I understand and some research: Tony went to U.S. and lift Emy her cousin but Tony did not know that her cousin emy was pregnant with pepe( soon become a drug pusher and get relationship with Lucy the housemaid of his aunt Betty and Uncle Bert. ) then when Tony return in the Philippines he met Carmen the daughter of Don Manuel. Don Manuel shows Tony how to buy people.
Tony barely protest: he accepts a position with the villas and goes along with shady business plans. Don Manuel proves his point when he shows Tony a canceled check made out to a magazine journalist whom Tony regards as a man of integrity. almost simultaneously, Tony realize that Carmen has lost respect for him and is having an affair

-Old and Good Friends Share a Piece

Old and good friends share a piece
Of passion, pain, and pleasure
That no one else, no family can
Begin to know or treasure.
It's as if a secret room
Held their private store,
And every time they met, they could
Go through some special door.

It doesn't matter if they see
Each other every day,
Or years and years go by before
They come and go away:

The moment that they meet it all
Is there--the memories of
Fierce loyalty and times of need
And gratitude and love.
